What is PRP?

Platelet Rich Plasma, or PRP as it is more commonly known, has been used increasingly in aesthetic medicine for the past few years. Platelets form one of the cellular components of blood and they contain a high content of “growth factors” – proteins that help to heal injured tissue or damaged skin.

The theory is, by placing platelets in tissues that require repair and regeneration, this will lead to the repair and regeneration of these tissues. Aged tissues will be rejuvenated as part of this process.

What dose the treatment involve?

The treatment involves taking a sample of your blood and harvesting the platelets from the patient’s own blood in order to inject them into problem skin areas, starting with the extraction of a minimal amount of the patient’s blood.

This is then placed in a centrifuge to spin down the blood which separates the red blood cells from the platelet rich plasma.  Upon re-injection the platelets release their growth factors which trigger surrounding cells to proliferate, in turn stimulating repair, increasing volume and rejuvenating the skin.

What can PRP treat?

Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy can be used to treat numerous cosmetic problems, such as

  • fine lines and wrinkles or  mild drooping or sagging skin around the eyes, mouth and cheeks.

  • dark under eye circles

  • to improve the appearance of dehydrated or mildly sagging skin on the face, backs of the hands, on the tops of the feet, elbows and knees. It can be used all over the body.

  • To treat acne scarring

  • To improve hair growth, especially in balding men

How many treatments will I require?

Generally, you need three treatments over a three month period. This can then be maintained by having a top-up treatment every 6 - 12 months.
